You have asked me, Lucilius, why, if a Providence rules the world, it still happens that many evils befall good men. This would be more fittingly answered in a coherent work designed to prove that a Providence does preside over the universe, and that God concerns himself with us.
The slave who became a gladiator. The gladiator who defied an Emperor. Gladiator was not only a hugely successful film, but it also brought about renewed fascination with everything Roman — it is important to look closer at films that truly enter the psyche of the audiences and inspire influence.
And why were the audiences transfixed? The above three sentences certainly aroused feelings of longing and aspiration — its timeless theme appealed to a modern audience. Its hero represented the man everyone wanted to be and be with. And the era brought about such a colourful palette and imagination that we all watched with dazzled astonishment.
Its spell, working from the opening bars of the soundtrack, as the audience is introduced to the man who will defy prejudice and injustice and die a hero. And yet despite this critics decried it. Gone are the critics of past who took the time to analyse the very depth and nuances of film, instead we are left with individuals who find it prudent to tell the story in excruciating detail and inform us of their personal dislikes.
Worse still, where the audience should judge with their own two eyes, they instead follow the hollow advice of those even less informed. Though it is true that today there are more films being released than anyone can watch, with practice an individual can nonetheless develop an experienced palette and a knowledge which will assist in navigating the course of fulfilment.
It is with feelings of dissatisfaction with the state of the world that I present this article, to reinstate greatness where greatness is due and to provide in-depth analysis of forgotten works.
It is not my aim to provide the opinion of any film, but rather to open a new way of looking so that the reader may go back and enjoy the filmic experience anew.
Films are mediums of knowledge and communication, and yet they are sidelined as mindless entertainment. Indeed there is much that is currently released that lacks even a sliver of thought, but there are those out there which given half a chance would reinvigorate the artless soul.
Gladiator is one such film. Pick up any review and the story will be told from the opening battle against Germania and finally leading to the death of Maximus. The alternative reading I would like to suggest here is that the story is in fact about a dead general who recounts his life, weeks before his death.
The structure of when death occurs in the film is highly important — it is my belief that Maximus begins the film in the afterlife and not on the battlefield. Furthermore, death represents a running theme spoken and intimated by almost all the characters.
A linear structure is a logical progression of events: A follows B follows C. Gladiator does not follow such a structure as there are three structural breakdowns. These structural breakdowns are such because they do not fit with what precedes them and what occurs afterwards. If I were to liken a linear progression to life, then structural breakdowns suggest something other than life.
The only possibility the film allows is the afterlife. These bookends also serve an emotional purpose:Download-Theses Mercredi 10 juin What is philosophy according to Socrates?
