Instead, stories often fracture under the pressure of an oversize cast, splitting off into unrelated plots. When a character is siloed off from the main plot, they drag the rest of the story down. Worse, if the siloed character ends up saving the day in the end, their contribution often feels unearned and random. The major characters are either claimants to the throne or closely connected to them.

The story is shrouded in secrecy, and your motives are often left untold unless you dig deep into the items, areas and people around you for answers. We will, however, do our best to explain some concepts and lore pieces from those games, so as to best catch up those who may have skipped playing them.
Below is just one interpretation of the lore of Dark Souls 3, how it connects to the rest of the series, and where it leaves us by the end of the game. There's a very good chance you agree or disagree with parts of or all of this lore, and that's fine!

Why has the flame faded? Well, typically, a hero will rise up and link the flame, the age of fire will renew, the Curse recedes and an age of peace will reign for countless years until the Curse returns. With no one there, with no new soul to infuse its strength, the fire is fading, and the darkness is starting to overpower the light.
This is a new scenario for us to be in, where we are no longer in a world where the fire still has some power left. Why is it Fading? For the purpose of this article, we are making the assumption that the events of Dark Souls 1 ended with you linking the First Flame.
As we said, someone must link the flame at the Kiln of the First Flame. Lord Gwyn was the first, then Dark Souls 1 happens and we link it.
However, what if the chosen hero did just that. What makes him so important though, is that he was also destined to become a Lord of Cinder.
